Does BestBuy’s Geek Squad sell customer data other than open-box items? Or it’s just a data breach?

On January 12, 2023, I bought an Open Box monitor from BestBuy’s Geek Squad, and since then, I have received approximately ten emails with BestBuy and Geek Squad’s logo, which are clearly scams:

Please note that all these emails have been received in less than ten days from my first-ever purchase from Geek Squad.

There are a few possibilities here:
1. Their database got hacked just a few days after my order.
2. There’s a data leak in their system (either by a bug in their software or an employee)
3. They're selling their customer data.

It is important to note that this is my personal experience and observation and is not confirmed whether BestBuy’s Geek Squad is selling customer data or if there has been a data breach. However, the short time frame between my purchase and the receipt of spam emails raises suspicion, and it is a cause for concern. The fact that some of these emails were received in my inbox rather than the spam folder increases the risk of fraud for unsavvy users.

Customers trust companies like BestBuy to handle their personal and sensitive information with care, and it is unacceptable for them to mishandle this information in any way. A data breach or the selling of customer data can have severe consequences, including identity theft and financial fraud.

It is crucial for companies like BestBuy to have robust security measures in place to protect customer data. This includes regular security audits and testing, employee training, and incident response plans. It is also essential for companies to notify customers immediately in the event of a data breach and to provide them with the necessary information and resources to protect themselves.

In this case, it is recommended that customers who have experienced similar issues contact BestBuy’s Geek Squad customer support and provide them with screenshots of the spam emails they received. It is also important for customers to monitor their credit reports and financial statements for any suspicious activity.

In conclusion, customers have the right to expect that their personal and sensitive information will be handled with care, and it is the responsibility of companies like BestBuy to ensure that this is the case. If customers have reason to believe that their data has been mishandled, they have the right to seek legal action.
